CFEC Career Fair video highlights. Yes, some great companies have jobs in Orlando!

CFEC.org is a non profit who has 6 career fairs each year. While unemployment in Orlando is still over 11%, this career fair certainly showed some hope that employers are starting to hire again.

If you are in between careers, want to change careers or struggling with a career choice, healthcare can be a winner. What separates healthcare from most industries is that is is recession proof. Also, it does require additional education and training. In other words, you can't be a healthcare professional without a commitment. Oil Spill Creating Jobs- Want to help? Florida has a oil spill job website.

As the gulf oil spill continues to grow, it will actually create jobs. Sure, this is not the job stimulus we are looking for but it is a reality. Actually, the jobs to clean up the gulf may be some of the most important jobs created in Florida in years. Why? If the oil takes over our beaches, our already fragile tourism industry will take a huge hit. Some of the jobs will be located in Orlando, but most will be near the spill area.

Governor Charlie Crist has a new oil spill jobs website called www.floridagulfrecoveryjobs.com.

As this site grows in popularity, it will give those seeking jobs a great resource to see what companies are hiring. Most of the companies will be contracted to clean up the mess.

The good news is the health care industry is changing and you don't have to be a doctor to earn a great living. This is an article I wrote for Insight Magazine titled "Recession Proofing Your Career"


Recession Proofing Your Career

The recession of 2009 has dramatically impacted Central Florida industries. From the home based small business run by a husband and wife team to the conglomerate giants with 20,000 employees, it seems everyone in Florida is taking a big hit. Well, almost every everyone.


Between 2007 and 2018, seven of the 10 fastest-growing jobs in the U.S. will be in healthcare.

In 2006 Orange County, Orlando and the Metro Orlando Economic Development Commission invested resources to build what is known as “Medical City” in Southeast Orlando. Today, we have the Burnham Institute for Medical Research and the UCF Medical School up and running. Nemours Children Hospital, the new VA Hospital, Florida Hospital Diabetes center and UF Medical Research are currently being built.

Right before our eyes, Central Florida is building a world class, recession proof industry in the life sciences and healthcare industries.

Why should you care? According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), between 2007 and 2018, seven of the 10 fastest-growing jobs in the U.S. will be in healthcare. Of the top 30 fastest-growing jobs, 17 are healthcare-related. And that just isn’t nurses and doctors, either. Medical technicians, physical therapists, technology professionals, administration personnel , food service employees, construction workers, drivers, scientists and many other occupations are included as well.

Medical City is projected to create 10,000 jobs and provide $1.5 Billion in economic impact over the next 5 years. Do I have your attention? Here are a few more stats to back up those claims:

1) The number of Americans older than 65 will reach 41 million by 2010 and 71 million by 2030.

2) Central Florida is expected to double in size in the next 20 years.

3) According to the BLS, healthcare jobs will grow by 30.3 percent through 2014.

4) To save costs, healthcare is creating new lower paying jobs like technicians that do not require 4 year degrees.

As for Central Florida, what healthcare jobs will be available you ask? Many of the jobs that are in high demand will require a minimum of a 4 year degree. Registered nurses, physical therapists, dentists, respiratory therapists, lab technicians, scientists, radiologists, pharmacists, cardiovascular technologists and many other disciplines need advanced education, but will always be in demand.

If you’re in a place in life you can’t go back to school for four years, don’t worry, you can still get a job in healthcare. The BLS indicates that 75 percent of high growth jobs that require an associate’s degree are medically related. Here are just a few suggestions:

1) Physical Therapist Assistant: $43,000. Assist physical therapists with patients rehab by helping with exercises and mobility. You can be trained and certified in about 20 months.

2) Medical Assistants: $23,000-$34,000. Duties include administration, assisting physicians, simple lab tests and overall patient service.

3) CT/Mammography/Ultrasound Technologists: $28,000-$57,900. Technology advancement in this area has grown tremendously. Get certified and trained within 12-24 months.

4) Nuclear Medicine Technologist: $49,000 to $71,000. Requires an associates’ degree and certificate. Duties include utilizing radioisotope equipment to help radiologists dispense and measure nuclear medicine.

5) Information Systems/Technology: $41,000-$90,000. Medical records and medical facilities all need updated and effective ways to digitally store and retrieve data. Billions will be spent in this area over the next 10 years.

One of the largest growing healthcare industry jobs in Central Florida will be home healthcare professionals including nurses, social workers and home healthcare aids that come into the home to take care of patients. Healthcare aids make an average of $20.00 per hour administering medications, checking blood pressure, temperature and overall health outlook. This is a huge business in Central Florida with the BLS predicting a 49 percent growth in this area throughout the next decade.

The bottom line? If you want to recession proof your career, get into the healthcare industry. Invest in the training and it will pay you back with a long, stable and financially rewarding career.

What does this picture from the Sun Rail signing tell you about the future of Orlando?

On Wednesday this week, I walked from our downtown office over to witness Sun Rail signing on Church Street. Our Governor, Charlie Crist was there as well as Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and Orange County Mayor Rich Crotty and many other Senators and Representatives.

To me, this picture says so much about Orlando's and Central Florida's future! This is why:

1. "Jobs, Jobs, Jobs" Gov. Crist is predicting 8,000 new jobs to build SunRail. I look at this picture and see 50,000 jobs being created in future years! Mass transit WILL allow companies to expand and relocate in Central Florida. Just the areas around the stations will give you a glimpse of the room Central Florida will have for business expansion.

2. Mass Transit. You want a great city? This is the first step. The next one will be putting rail between the airport, medical city, innovation way, UCF and the convention center, I-Drive and the attraction. This should link to SunRail.

3. Look at the picture. In the background, you see the new arena being built. This entire area will be rebuilt and new businesses and jobs come with it. The new arena will be a major landmark in our great city and will promote Central Florida in way we never imagined.

4. Church Street Station. One word comes to mind...GOLDMINE! Sure, it has had its problems that last few years but with SunRail, the new Arena and the Performing Arts Center all within a couple blocks...I don't think it takes to much to realize that this place will prosper! Again, businesses and jobs will be created and employees will be able to get there without driving!

5. Excitement for the future. Central Florida is putting in place the infrastructure to not only handle future growth but to attract it! 9/11 and the current recession has proved that we need more diverse industries other than tourism and hospitality to help weather these storms. I look at this picture and see the center of Central Florida glowing with endless possibilities of a great future...and for you...JOBS!

Happy Thanksgiving Central Florida

In a way, Thanksgiving couldn’t come fast enough this year. It has been a challenging employment year to say the least. I know a lot of you are still looking for a good job. Many of you are under-employed. No matter what your situation is, all indications are it is going to get better in 2010.

Actually, we are seeing a pickup in activity in job postings the last couple months. Nothing dramatic, but believe me when I tell you, it beats the down cycle we have experienced the last 14 months.

We are thankful for the fantastic staff we have at OrlandoJobs.com and GreatInsuranceJobs.com. Over the last few months I have told our staff to keep in mind one thing during this time and I would tell the same thing…if this is the worst recession that can be thrown at us in the last 100 years, boy do we have an upside!
And so do you! We are very thankful for that.

Should you put your Facebook or Linkedin profile Link on your Resume?

I have been gathering your questions for the last couple months and thought I would share some of the more common career questions. If you ever have question, please make sure you submit it and we will answer it!

Q: When a company has more than one job posted that I am qualified for, should I apply to all of them even though they are with the same company?

A: This all depends on a couple factors. First, if the application process for the job takes you directly to the hiring company's own application technology, this will prevent you from applying more than once. However, it is critical that in your cover letter, you let the hiring managers know you are qualified for xyz position as well. Secondly, only submit your resume more than once if the jobs that you are interested in go to completely different departments with different email addresses.

Q: Should I put my salary requirements in my cover letter?

A: I get this question every week. In most cases I would suggest never putting in your salary requirements. If you do, you run the chance of pigeonholing yourself into that amount should you get the job. Most people don’t negotiate salary well anyway, and if you show your hand early, you are usually dead in the water. Hopefully, you are not applying to ANY job that you don’t at least know the salary range for the position.

Q: Should I put my LinkedIn or Facebook profile link on my resume?

A: Another very good question. I would say yes for a LinkedIn Profile and no for a Facebook profile. LinkedIn allows you to virtually put your resume online with the ability to add pictures, blogs, links to news stories about you and references. Just make sure that your LinkedIn profile matches your resume. Facebook is your social network. Keep it that way.

Q: What should I put as my objective on a resume?

A: No matter what job you are applying to, you must build your resume for the “eyes” of the person who will review it. Most job postings are getting at least 50 resumes. The easier you make it for the person who gets your resume to identify you as a potential fit for a position, the more interviews you will get. To do this, at the top of resume state your objective clearly and make sure it matches the position. Here are a couple of examples:

Objective: Property Claims Specialist (Tie is to the job you are applying)
Objective: Executive Administrative Assistant (keep it simple)
Objective: Insurance Compliance Specialist (Catch the eye of the hiring company)
Just make sure that your career experience matches your objective. I have seen too many long winded objectives that are canned and meaningless. Get noticed by being simple and direct.
