Orlando Jobseekers: You can learn some very Valuable Career Lessons from Dwight Howard

By Roger Lear

Dwight Howard may leave Orlando and go play in another city doing the same job with a different team. Being a lifetime Magic basketball fan, I would hate to see him leave; but I certainly understand if he does. What you may not realize is “player” movement like this happens every day in the business world as well…it just isn’t broadcasted in the media. Great talent that is developed at a company (any business sector) gets recruited away by a competitor or other business opportunities all the time. The reasons top talent leaves one organization for another is usually on of the following:

1. No more challenge in the current job.
2. Management issues. (you don’t leave a company, you leave a manager)
3. New and different challenges with another company. (Technology, products, etc.)
4. Compensation
5. Lack of internal support.
6. Life changes. (Family, kids, etc)

It isn’t just professional athletes, CEO’s and doctors. It is web developers, administration assistants, front desk supervisors and customer service personnel. Yes, if you are the best at what you do and have a skill set that everyone needs, you are in demand.

Dwight Howard has many skills in common with many top employees at any company:

1. No matter what the skill set, top employees perform it at a high level. Web developers, sales professionals and hostesses all have the potential to be like Dwight. Dwight’s size, strength, enthusiasm and athleticism makes his skill set in his occupation tops in the NBA. What competing NBA wouldn’t want to recruit him or at least try? You can do the same with your career if you stand out with a specific skill set others need. People will notice!

2. Great employees bring value to an organization. Dwight makes the Orlando Magic tick and fills seats. He also is awesome in the community with his charity work through his foundation. What value do you bring to your company? If you left today, would anyone notice? To be recruited by the competitors, you have to have a value that automatically makes that company better. Even if you are a food server, if you are awesome at your job you will be surprised over time what opportunities may come to you either internally (management) or externally (other restaurants hiring you).

3. Top employees are honest and have integrity. Dwight is a leader in this as well. Orlando is very fortunate to have an athlete that makes off the court news when he is visiting hospitals or attending charity event. He is the guy you think he is because in all his years in Orlando, his honesty and integrity has never been an issue.

We want Dwight Howard to stay in Orlando for the next ten years. I also want to keep my top employees forever as well. The reality is that life allows you to make changes. Those of you that perform at a high level, bring value and are good honest people will always be in demand. Not all changes work out, but top employees with skill sets always land on their feet!

3,600 Jobs Available at Job Fair November 18 Wide Variety of Open Positions Including High-Pay, Bilingual Jobs

November 15, 2011 – Orlando, FL – The second annual Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida Classic Career Expo & Diversity Job Fair in Orlando this Friday offers 3,600 real, solid, current job opportunities to jobseekers. The openings represent more than 60 employers in a variety of industries, and include many professional, high-paying and diverse positions.

"These 3,600 jobs, along with the career expo, really can hit many demographics and allow job seekers of all skill levels to ‘target’ companies that may be able to hire them for networking at the fair," states Roger Lear, President and CEO of OrlandoJobs.com.

A listing of the open positions is available for jobseekers to download at www.orlandojobs.com/jobfair. The full list includes jobs in education, healthcare, IT, television, hospitality, engineering, sales and construction, as well as bilingual positions. Companies like Lockheed Martin, The Golf Channel, Home Depot, Chase, Orlando VA Hospital, Walt Disney, Verizon Wireless, McDonalds, UCF and 60 other companies are attending.

"The job fair is a classic way for businesses and job seekers to meet, but with the highest unemployment numbers in decades, they have, in the last few years, become stale and futile exercises with no real job openings," declares Lear. "We built the Classic Career Expo & Diversity Job Fair to end that stereotype and showcase the wealth of jobs available in Central Florida right now. Considering the U.S. Economy only added 80,000 jobs last month, it’s pretty exciting to realize that right here in Orlando we have the potential to increase that by more than 4% in a single event. "

Planned around the weekend of the Florida Classic football match-up between Bethune-Cookman University and Florida A&M University, organizers of the November 18th event are also donating sixty percent of the proceeds from booth revenue to a scholarship fund that is split between the two schools.

This jobs fair and career expo, sponsored by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida, will feature educational sessions from Central Florida’s top speakers on subjects like job search strategies, career advice and resume information sessions. Free to the public, jobseekers are urged to sign up today.

The TOP Five Words (think VERBS) your Resume Should Include and Why!

Over the last twenty years I have seen many resumes. Some are outstanding and to the point while others read like a long novel with a bad ending. The resume of today is different from the resumes from just a few years ago because of these factors:

1.High Unemployment. When an employer does have an open job, they are looking for at least an 80% skills match. Your resume must be a match.

2.Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) Computers scan your resume to determine your skill sets.

3.With employers receiving so many resumes, your resume must stand out.
Your resume must scream “what have you done for me lately” to the employer. To do this, make sure a few of these powerful verbs are part of your career story. A verb showcases your accomplishments!

1.Accomplished- If you are applying to a loss time workers compensation claims position, what are your accomplishments? Example: Accomplished the highest claim closing percentage in all offices of 98.2%.

2.Increased- If you are applying to an underwriting position that requires outside marketing to brokers and agents, your resume should scream this fact. Example: Increased overall territory penetration for brokers and agents by 38% resulting in a 28% increase in premium as an production underwriter for ABC Insurance Company.

3.Won- Employers like this word, especially in sales. Example: Won seven out of eight sales awards by averaging 22% over sales quota.

4.Reduced- Companies are looking for any way to save money so if the job you did at your last company saved any money, time or waste, broadcast it! If you are a customer service person, what is it that you reduced? Example: Reduced customer call times by 12% and increased call efficiency by 18% to lead my team. (Notice both power verbs?)

5.Exceeded- This is one of my favorites. It can apply to any job and really make you stand out. Look at the job you are applying to and try to decipher what you would have to do to exceed expectations if you got the job. If you exceeded expectations in your current or past job, you are going to be a great candidate. Example: Exceeded claims caseload closing rate by 25% leading to an overall savings to the company of $220,000.

The days of using words like team player, excellent, driven and energetic are over! These are statements that you better already possess if the job calls for this Power verbs allow you talk about what you bring to the table with real examples. It really is a great way to showcase your talents!

Job Trends in Central Florida- More Jobs but where are they? Orlando Jobs exsist. We talk about it on FOX 35.

Job trends in Central Florida: MyFoxORLANDO.com

A recent article listed Orlando as one of the top 10 cities for jobs now. Roger Lear, President of Orlandojobs.com , stopped by Good Day Monday to discuss job trends here in Central Florida.

Improving job market in Central Florida: Top 5 areas of Job Growth in these areas:
1) Hospitality and Tourism
2) Health Services
3) Education
4) Utilities
5) Transportation

2. Job Growth in the state is led by Orlando Metro Area in May
Orlando-Kissimmee-Sanford + 6,600 jobs

3. Central Florida also led the state with the most job loss in May.
Palm Bay-Melbourne-Titusville -6,800 jobs (Space coast jobs loss because of Shuttle program)

4. Florida's 10.6 unemployment rate lowest since August of 2009.

With all this said, many Central Floridians are still not confident that the job creation doesn't include higher paying jobs. It is a MAJOR issue that will not change until central Florida companies are completely confident the economy is improving. However, unlike the last couple years, jobs are out there and each month Central Florida is leading the state in job creation.
Job seekers and underemployed HAVE to do the following:

1. Start Fresh- Forget about the last 2 years and all the negatives (turn downs, applications that went unnoticed, etc..)

2. TARGET your job search. Spend more time identifying companies you know nothing about that have use for your exact background. Too many job seekers spend too much time applying to jobs on websites like Orlandojobs.com and Careerbuilder. You must combine this with precision targeting of companies. Once you identify these companies, apply directly at their corporate websites.

3. Network. Online, make sure all your Facebook friends and Linkedin connections know you are in career transition. Off line, let everyone know in your neighborhood, church , groups and organizations know your looking. Attend networking events with the Chambers of commerce's and business networks.

2011 Central Florida ( Orlando ) Hiring Report Released. We found 10,000 open jobs and a decent forecast for 2011!

OrlandoJobs.com Survey Finds 10,000 Available Jobs in Central Florida
Another 10,000 Jobs Projected by Companies for 2011 Hiring

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

February 11, 2011 – Orlando, FL – In a bi-annual survey of Central Florida corporations, OrlandoJobs.com reports 10,000 open and available jobs, plus a projected addition of 10,000 more by the end of this year. The survey and its findings were released today and are posted on OrlandoJobs.com. (www.orlandojobs.com/whitepaper)

Roger Lear, President and CEO of OrlandoJobs.com, believes this good news forecasts an even better outlook for an end to the 11.3% unemployment rate in the region: “Central Florida companies are poised to be hiring leaders for the state. It will not happen overnight, but will be a slow upward curve.”

OrlandoJobs.com conducted phone interviews with 166 Central Florida-based companies between December 13, 2010 and December 30, 2010. The 166 companies surveyed employ an overall total of 186,431 employees in Central Florida, and cover 17 sectors, including: accounting, automotive, banking/finance, call center, construction, education, government, healthcare, hospitality, insurance, law, manufacturing, non-profit, real estate, sports/entertainment, timeshare, transportation, and utility.

KEY FINDINGS

• 74% of companies surveyed have current job openings that are available immediately.
• 92% of companies surveyed plan on hiring at least one person in 2011.
• 35% of companies surveyed plan on hiring at least 50 employees in 2011.
• 17% plan on hiring 200 or more employees in 2011.
• 32% of all companies feel that their hiring will be better than it was in 2010.

The top five hiring sectors for Central Florida are Healthcare, Hospitality, Education, Technology and Banking/Finance.

“This is great news for Central Floridians looking for employment this year,” says OrlandoJobs.com’s Roger Lear. “However, our survey also uncovered four impediments for job-seekers in today’s marketplace: human resource departments that are overwhelmed by floods of applications, many positions requiring specialized skills, still others are low-paying and may not compete against an unemployment paycheck, and all of these factors are contributing to a ‘hidden’ job market.”

“While frustrating,” explains Lear, “these findings are an opportunity for enterprising applicants to tweak a job search and focus on getting into a great company at a lower level now, so when hiring does rebound, you are in a position to advance yourself internally.”

The entire survey can be downloaded here www.orlandojobs.com/whitepaper and media interviews are available upon request. Please call Roger Lear at 407-645-4224 or Roger@OrlandoJobs.com.

The Top 3 Things You Must Do to Get the Job You Want in Orlando Florida in 2012

I speak to a lot of jobseeker groups each month. I open most of these conversations saying that it isn’t the lack of jobs that is holding you back; it is your job search. Too many jobseekers waste time in the job search doing things that do absolutely nothing to accomplish the goal of getting a great job.To get a job or a better job it takes some work. It is easy to go to job boards and apply to jobs. This is a great place to start and can give you some very valuable information on who is hiring and what types of jobs are open that meet your background.

The top three things that you should make sure you do are the following when looking for a new job or to upgrade your career:

1. Target your skills to the companies that need those skills. Start with job boards but expand your search to companies that may not be posting jobs at this time. Google lists of companies in your area and go directly to those companies websites career centers and see what they have to offer. No matter what you do, make sure any job that you apply to is a 60%-70% skill match to what you do. DO NOT waste time applying to jobs that do not match up. In higher unemployment, your application will not even be considered.

2. Understand Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS): When you apply to a large company today, most have a separate application process that you must go through to submit your application. The number one complaint of job seekers is that they apply to many jobs through these systems and they just feel like they go into a “black hole”. The truth is that you do go into a black hole if your resume and skills sets are not “optimized” for the job you are applying to. In other words, if the resume you submit doesn’t clearly state (via keywords, experience) that you can handle the job, the computer (NOT a person) will not ever let you get out of the black hole. It is that simple and it is the reason your job search should just be concentrated on jobs and companies that need your skills. For entry level type positions, it usually comes down to education, internships and activities to determine who may be a fit.

3. Your resume is still 1998. I love great summary statements on resumes. It is nice to know that you are dedicated, enthusiastic, team player and achiever. However, in today’s job market, this needs to be replaced immediately with just a skill or job title. It all goes back to concentrating your job search on finding jobs that you can actually get. If you are a commercial property underwriter, in bold at the top of the resume the title should be “Commercial Property Underwriter”. The supporting experience should relate to the position you are applying for. If you find yourself really having to change your experience, you are probably are not a match and you are wasting your time.

Hope this helps. It is real information that you need to know; especially in a very poor job market place. Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions.
